STAGE II: THE NEW FOUNDATION

As we dive into Stage 2 of our journey—The New Foundation—let’s take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come. Stage 2 is all about the process of building stability and momentum in your recovery. This is where we begin to solidify the groundwork for lasting change, and it’s a time to learn, grow, and push back against the symptoms that have held us back for so long.

About Stage II: The New Foundation

In this stage, we learn new tools and skill sets to create what we call a pure safe space—a mental and emotional environment where we can start to heal and build from a place of security and calm. This is not a time to rush through things or force ourselves to be “better” right away. Rather, it’s about acceptance and base-building. By working through the discomforts and pushing back against the symptoms, we begin to regain momentum.

Stage 2 is all about commitment—this is the stage where we establish the foundation of our recovery program, and this foundation is essential for the stages to come. We are creating a solid platform from which we can grow stronger, more resilient, and more empowered. It’s a time to develop new habits, reinforce our dedication, and step fully into the process of healing.

Key Learning Goals in Stage II

We develop a ‘Pure Safe Space’ and Base to Build From:

The first priority in Stage 2 is creating that safe mental space, free of judgment, shame, and overwhelm. This space will be your sanctuary—where you can start to process the ups and downs of recovery with kindness and patience. You’re not meant to do this perfectly; you’re meant to do this with compassion and openness, recognizing that growth takes time. From here, we start to rebuild the foundation of your well-being.

We begin to work a refined checklist program daily:

Having a daily checklist becomes a game-changer in Stage 2. This checklist isn’t a burden; it’s a guide to help you stay on track, regain structure, and build consistency. Your checklist should include physical exercises, mindfulness practices, exposure activities, and other healing strategies that have been tailored for you. Each day you check off your tasks, you’re making progress and reinforcing the habit of taking positive, intentional action in your recovery.

3.) We must open ourselves and grow our work ethic:

In Stage 2, one of the most important things to do is reestablish our work ethic—both in terms of our commitment to the recovery process and to ourselves. For many of us, the recovery journey requires us to show up each day, to engage in the practices that promote healing, and to trust in the process. This is the time to push yourself in small, manageable ways—whether it’s working on your exercises, challenging negative thoughts, or showing up for the things that bring you joy.

Key Roadblocks in Stage II

Trusting in the Process

Trust can be one of the hardest things to cultivate in this stage. It’s easy to fall into the trap of impatience or to doubt whether things are truly improving. But remember: recovery is not linear. There will be ups and downs, moments of clarity and moments of frustration. Trust that, even in those difficult moments, you are making progress, and every little step forward counts.

Being Okay with Some Increased Agitation

As we push back against the symptoms, there may be times when you feel more agitated, more anxious, or more unsettled than usual. This is a normal part of the healing process. You’re moving energy, uncovering layers of discomfort, and working through your emotions. Know that this increased agitation is often temporary, and it’s a sign that you’re getting closer to breaking free from the old patterns.

Staying Dedicated to the Exercises

Staying dedicated to the daily exercises can be difficult, especially when life gets overwhelming or distractions arise. But this is where the commitment comes in. The daily exercises, however small they seem, are essential for building the foundation of your recovery. By staying dedicated, you’re proving to yourself that you can keep going, no matter how difficult it feels in the moment.

In Closing:

Stage 2 is a pivotal time in your recovery. It’s a time to build momentum, establish consistency, and lay the groundwork for lasting change. You’ve got the tools you need; now, it’s time to put them into practice and trust that, with time, the discomfort will start to fade, and the new you will begin to emerge.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all at once. Recovery is about showing up, day after day, with dedication and trust. You’ve got this. Keep pushing forward, and progress will follow.

Until next time, keep going.
